Do the right thing quotes

     Martin Luther King Jr. was and still is an influential and famous figure.  He fought for things many were too scared to and lead people to victory.  The quote he speaks talks about how the act of violence or committing violence is inhumane and there are many other ways to handle situations. He explains how it creates awful occurrences and leads to more hate in the world rather than love.  In his eyes no violence at all in any situation is doing the right thing.  He believes to do the right thing one must not let things get to themselves and walk away.  This is yeah ideal but in our society and the one back then when Dr. King said these words violence is a norm and it will occur.  

     Malcolm X has a somewhat different perspective about violence than MLK.  He does say that he does not advocate violence and would indeed want aggressive violence to stop.  Yet he in his viewpoint violence is doing the right thing ONLY and ONLY if in self defense.  He even says "I dont even call it violence when its self-defense," I agree with him in a sense that people have the right to protect themselves to an extent.  If someone is getting brutally beaten by a spouse, partner, parent, or officer, they have the right to protect oneself.  Malcolm calls doing the right thing (self defense) being intelligent.

                                                    What is doing the right thing?


As we read the script "Do the right thing" directed by Spike lee, the question of what is the right thing keeps being raised.  Most of the characters in this movie have tension between other characters which causes them to act in irrational ways.  We as viewers must decide who is doing the in fact "right thing," and whether or not the script provides a clear point about doing the right thing.


In my opinion the script provides two ways for what the right thing is in every situation.  A point to every disagreement is to see who acted rationally and did the right thing and who behaved aggressively and out of line.  Throughout the script many tensions rise between people and each reader can have different opinion on who did the right thing and acted correctly.
I think the script shows how doing the right thing makes your life easier and you live a more carefree life.  When Buggin out was freaking out on Sal and he pulled out the bat, he caused Buggin out to form an idea of forming a boycott against Sals pizzeria.  If Sal had just calmly talked to Buggin out he wouldnt have had people boycotting him.  Also what the heck was Buggin Out's issue with Clifton, he had a tiny reason to freak out on him but did not need to scream and bring in a crowd.  I think the people in this town have serious anger issues. 

Towards the end of the script doing the right thing is seriously questioned when Sal smashes Radio Raheem's boombox and then he chokes Sal out.  It is hard to tell who is right in this situation, maybe if Buggin didnt boycott then Sal wouldnt get mad at Radio Raheem which would cause less violence.
