Martin Luther King Jr. was and still is an influential and famous figure. He fought for things many were too scared to and lead people to victory. The quote he speaks talks about how the act of violence or committing violence is inhumane and there are many other ways to handle situations. He explains how it creates awful occurrences and leads to more hate in the world rather than love. In his eyes no violence at all in any situation is doing the right thing. He believes to do the right thing one must not let things get to themselves and walk away. This is yeah ideal but in our society and the one back then when Dr. King said these words violence is a norm and it will occur. 
Malcolm X has a somewhat different perspective about violence than MLK. He does say that he does not advocate violence and would indeed want aggressive violence to stop. Yet he in his viewpoint violence is doing the right thing ONLY and ONLY if in self defense. He even says "I dont even call it violence when its self-defense," I agree with him in a sense that people have the right to protect themselves to an extent. If someone is getting brutally beaten by a spouse, partner, parent, or officer, they have the right to protect oneself. Malcolm calls doing the right thing (self defense) being intelligent.
